2009 Regional Youth Aviation Art Competition Winners

March 4, 2009

A few years ago the Museum and the San Diego Airport began a collaboration as part of an international aviation art competition. Unfortunately, the international funding went away, but the Museum and the Airport decided to continue the partnership, with a local aviation art competition. And so the 2009 Regional Youth Aviation Art Competition was born.

For this inaugural competition, we asked students from throughout San Diego county to design a new flying machine that runs on an alternative fuel, i.e. no fossil or petroleum based fuels. The students responded with some very clever ideas and artwork. One idea, for example, involved moving a person inside a gas-inflated bubble. While not a top winner, the judges were still extremely impressed because the artist put some real science behind the bubble theme to support the idea.

All of the winners received a certificate and prizes from the Museum and the Airport. Even better, their artwork will be displayed in at the Airport for thousands of travelers to see. But because we do not want you to have to drive down to the airport to see these great pieces of art, below are the winners (their work is also shown on the Museum website):

Finally, I see someone else with the same ideas.
What do you get when you mix, Kids+Art+Aviation+Public Displays=Fun
I would love to get in touch with you and share some of my ideas.

    Sincerely,

    Michelle Rouch,
    Engineer, Mom, and Aviation Artist
